In 1859, Edmonia Lewis, a brilliant and defiant young Black sculptor, survives betrayal and racial violence in America, ultimately fleeing to Rome in search of freedom. There, she encounters Emma Stebbins, a celebrated artist whose privilege shields her even as it confines her. Drawn together by ambition, attraction, and a shared hunger for self-determination, the two women begin a love that is as dangerous as it is transformative.

However, when false rumors from a professional rival and the jealousy of Emma’s longtime lover threaten Edmonia’s future, Edmonia must decide whether to run once again—or stand her ground. With a radical sisterhood of women artists at her side, Edmonia claims sovereignty over her work, her heart, and her destiny.
